Idli Dosa Batter

South Indian cuisine is famous worldwide for its taste and health benefits. Specially idli and dosa is globe favourite item. Moreover, dieticians in India always promote having idli at least once a week for breakfast. This is because it is good for the gut health. 

Apart from this, kids too love eating idli and dosa with sambhar. When we have to make south indian food at home, we buy batter from stores as homemade idlis do not turn out to be soft and fluffy. Do you know that it is actually very simple to make it at home with simple ingredients ? Just follow the recipe I have shared and your family will absolutely love it. 

It takes around 16-17 hours to start from scratch. This is because it takes 12 hours for the batter to ferment properly. You may watch my video to see the tips and tricks to follow along. Preparation Time: 16-17 hours
Cooking time: 15-20 mins

Ingredients:
  • Urad dal - 1 cup
  • Rice - 3 cups
  • Methi dana - 1 teaspoon
  • Water - as required
  • Salt - as per taste


Method:
  1. Wash and soak urad dal in a bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, wash and soak rice.
  3. Use idli rice if available or else use small rice.
  4. After 4 hours, remove water and grind dal and rice separately.
  5. Add water as required.
  6. This batter should be thick as so add water accordingly.
  7. First grind rice and transfer it in a bowl.
  8. Then grind dal and mix both batter well.
  9. Now cover it and let it ferment for 12 hours.
  10. After 12 hours, mix the batter well.
  11. To make idli, take little batter in a small bowl and salt to it.
  12. Place batter on idli trays and steam it for 5-7 minutes.
  13. To make dosa, add little water to make pouring consistency, add salt and make dosa out of it.
  14. Serve it with sambhar and coconut chutney.
