Vegetable Rava Upma | Suji Upma
Semolina is one of the most versatile and healthy grain. It is called suji or rava widely. It contains very less calorie and still keeps the tummy full. It is used differently in different places and can be made into a sweet dish or a savory one. Rava or Suji can be seen in all the households as the most common breakfast all the world is suji upma. It is quick and healthy breakfast option.
Rava or Suji is added to many recipes in order to make the food crunchy. It is mixed with other flour as when suji is heated it makes the item crispy and crunchy. Just like in pizzas, bhaturas, samosas, and many other recipes. It enhances the taste in the mouth.
One of the amazing benefit of suji is that it has zero cholesterol. Thus, it can be eaten frequently. It also promotes weight loss so mostly all the diet plans suggest suji upma in the breakfast. It can also be eaten as dinner as it gets easily digested.
Suji upma is a savory dish. I have added vegetables in it to make it more tasty and healthy. Sometimes kids do not like to eat simple upma, so vegetables can be included in it to make it nutritious for them. Let us see how to make it.
- Semolina(Rava) - 1 cup
- Oil - 3 tablespoon
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Green Chilies - 1 piece
- Grated ginger - 1 inch
- Onion - 2 medium size (sliced)
- Curry leaves - 6 7 leaves
- Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon
- French beans - 1/2 cup
- Cauliflower - 1/2 cup
- Capsicum - 1/2 cup
- Salt to taste
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
- Dhaniya jeera powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala - a pinch
- Water - 4 cups
- Coriander leaves - handful
- Roast rava in pan till it changes colour a bit and it releases aroma.
- Transfer it into a plate to cool down.
- In the same pan, add oil.
- Once the oil is heated, add mustard seeds.
- Let it splutter. Now add green chilies and ginger.
- Saute it for a minute and then add sliced onion into it.
- Once onions become transparent, add curry leaves.
- Adding curry leaves at this time, makes them soft instead of crunchy.
- Let onion saute, then add asafoetida.
- Now add all the vegetables.
- Saute them well.
- Then add spices. Let the spices cook.
- After that add roasted rava.
- Cook it for a minute and then add water little by little.
- Make sure to keep stirring while adding water.
- Add already boiled water into the pan. This helps to avoid any lumps in the upma.
- Keep stirring till rava absorbs entire water.
- It will become soft and thick.
- Lastly add coriander leaves on the top.
- Mix it well.
- Cover with lid for 2 minutes.
- Serve it hot.
- For serving, grease a bowl with little oil.
- Fill it with upma.
- Put the bowl on plate upside down.
- Upma will come out in a shape of a bowl.
- Serve it with fresh lemon.
