Suji Appam


Suji or Rava is one of the favorite ingredients for health conscious people as it is easy to digest and contains less calories. There are many savory and spicy dishes made out of it. It is also called semolina in some parts. It is very tiny grain and is also used in many dishes as a crunchy agent. It has a tendency to rise when soaked. Thus it is also used to make cakes.

Suji Appam is a south indian dish and is used making appam tray. This tray has small cavities where the batter is poured and small tiny round appams are made out of it. This tray is easily available in utensil shops or even online. One can make different varieties of appam. Today i will share vegetable appam which is not only healthy and tasty but also quick to make.

Preparation Time: 15 mins
Cooking time: 10-15 mins

Ingredients:
  • Suji/Rava - 3/4 cup
  • Curd - 1/3 cup
  • Water - 3/4 cup
  • Onion - 1/4 cup
  • Tomato - 1/4 cup
  • Capsicum - 1/4 cup
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dhaniya jeera powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Haldi powder - a pinch
  • Garam masala - a pinch
  • Ginger green chili paste - 1 teaspoon
  • Oil - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - 6-7 leaves


Method: 
  1. In a bowl, add suji, curd and water. Mix it well and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. After 15 minutes suji will rise and batter will become thick.
  3. Now add all the vegetables and little water. Mix it well.
  4. Then add all the spices and mix it.
  5. In a small pan make tampering for it by adding oil, mustard seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves.
  6. Pour this tampering on the batter and mix everything well.
  7. Now add baking soda and mix vigourously.
  8. Now heat appam tray and pour oil on each cavities.
  9. Pour batter on each cavities and cook it on both the sides on medium heat.
  10. It should turn crispy on both the sides.
  11. Remove it and serve it with your favorite chutney.
